Special Needs Gymnastics

Did I mention I love Utah!!!! I love all the opportunities there are for my girls! It's a blessing for me. Roxy has been doing Gymnastics here in Kaysville, and Shay was always asking me if she could do it too. I felt horrible because I knew that she wouldn't be able physically and developmentally to do all the things kids her age do in their class.

So I finally got the nerve up to ask the owner if she would consider doing a class just for kids with special needs. She said YES right away!! I was soooo excited about it, a couple people I know around have came, but I am going to take fliers around. I am so excited about it, Shay and I both smile the whole time. Most things are very hard and frustrating for Shay and it's nice to see her just play and just be happy for the whole 50 minutes!!
Roxy went to Shay's a few times, but she is not paying attention at all in this class. She did her first handstand this time, all by herself!! YAY Roxy!! I will be taking to her own class starting next week. :)

I love this little girl!! I am sooo proud of all the hard work she has put in during her short life. Shay is kinda demanding lately, I thought as she got older she would get a little easier and a little more independent. She is getting a little more independent, she can put on her own socks now, her own panties, her pants, her rain boots. She still needs help with everything else. She rarely has to do all that in one setting, she takes a little while and about 5 times prompting just to one of them. :)

Shay is driving me crazy lately, she is obsessed with eating! I have talked with therapist and dieticians, and I am trying new ideas that they are giving me. It seems as though she is starving at all times and no matter how much I feed her she is never satisfied. It has gotten to the point the where I had to buy a baby gate (which the kids pretend they are in prison with, haha). It has been working to keep her out of the kitchen, but not helping with her fits over food. She yells out all the time, "I want to go to WENDY'S" I regret now ever going out to eat, EVER! It has really been affecting our family life at home. I guess it's just another speed bumb we have to get over, I am trying my best and that's all I can do.

I just love looking at her sweet little face though.........

1p36 Deletion Syndrome Conference in SLC Utah

In July we were able to attend and help plan for the 4th Annual 1p36 Conference. Luckily it was here in Utah so we could finally go. This year was our first one. It was really nice to be able to meet other families and to get the know the other kids. They are all so sweet and little angels.

I liked what Rachel Coleman from 'Signing Time' said "It's amazing to think about all the people I would know if I didn't have a deaf daughter" It's so true for all us 1p36 families. We wouldn't know any of you if Shay didn't have her syndrome. I am thankful we live in these days that I can communicate with other Mom's and to be able to meet so many other families who know what we are going through. It is was so amazing and a huge blessing in my life! Here a few pictures to remember the weekend by....Shay and Sammie

Another trip to Vegas!

We decided to take a break from life and go down to Las Vegas to stay with John's Dad and family. We had a great time with them, and the kids really enjoyed their Uncle Wyatt. We mostly just played in the water, it was too hot to even go to the park in at 9 in the morning. It was a blast and well worth the drive.(At the park at 9am)

Roxy has been such a big help to Shay in the past couple years. She has really come to love her and teach help me her all the time. She teaches her to count and teaches her letters. When they do play good together, she teaches her to pretend play. Roxy is an excellent role model for Shay! Shay is a lucky girl to have such a smart, almost always kind sister. :) We love her too!!! SO MUCH!!!

I am so proud of this little girl. She has come so far it's amazing, she always surprises and amazes me. The little things are the big things for Shay. Like the other day how she wanted to go home and she told me "I want to go home!" I didn't even care that she was complaining because I was so excited she said "to" in her sentence. This was a complete sentence for Shay and it was awesome!! It's little things like this that make me a proud Mama to my little Shay Shay.

My friend Karen invited us to the rodeo in Ogden on Friday. It was the girls first rodeo! We had a good time eating junk and watching the show. (Enjoying her cotton candy and sprite)

Shay was a little overwhelmed because it was loud and a lot of people. But she still had a great time! When we got in the car to go home I asked the girls if they had fun and what was their favorite part. They both told me "the horses and sheeps" were their favorite. :) It was nice to get out on a Friday night for once and thank you Karen for the invite and for the free tickets! YEEEEHAW!

WORD GIRL has been arrested!!

Lately Shay has been wanting to watch this cartoon on PBS Kids called WordGirl. She asks for it often. So today I was on the computer while Roxy and Shay were having quiet time, and I hear Shay start to cry really hard. I knew this was serious because I just know I'm her Mom. So she comes to me with tons of tears in her eyes and can't even tell me what is wrong. So I rewond the show (thank you DVR I love you!) and saw that WordGirl had been arrested for some reason. Shay was devisated! She was still crying holding on to me tight and I asked her if she wanted to watch something else. Of course she said yes and she said "ya, that will make me feel better". She is such a innocent little girl and thinks that everything on TV is real! She cries at monsters on Scooby Doo, but she loves Scooby! She is my little sweet heart and I love being her "Mama"!

Tubes Again??

Today was Shay's appointment to get tubes. They called on Friday and reminded me that I have to be there at 6:45 am. So being the wonderful mother that I am and having to babysit the night before and had guests all weekend, I forgot!! I think I deserve the worst mother of the day award today! I felt like an idiot when the surgical center calls at 7:15 and woke me up and reminded me. So I asked if we could rush over, if they would still do it. They said yes, and we rushed very quickly over to Layton.

I have been trying to get these ENT doctors to give Shay tubes for almost a year now. She always has negative pressure when I take her in to get her hearing tested. I have noticed some regression in her speech sounds and I knew she needed these tubes. So 3 ENT appointments, 3 hearing tests, and 9 months later finally they said there was enough evidence for Shay to get her tubes.

This is her second pair, so I knew what to expect. Shay was a bit shocked because I forgot to talk to her about it before. (I am terrible, I know) So she was a bit anxious and upset. The only thing that helped her from not kicking and screaming on her way in the surgery was this cute little wagon. So thankful for that thing. Her surgery went well, and the Doctor said she had lots of fluid in both ears and the left was worse than the right.

Now on to more hearing tests to see if this was the issue with her hearing problems lately! She is my brave little girl and I love her sooooo much!

Fun with Family!

This past weekend we had company. John sister and her family came down to visit John and we had a great time. In the picture is Shay's cousins, London and Derek. We got to ride on a carriage down town at the Gateway, while we were going I thought about it, this was my very first carriage ride and I'm 25. Shay got to ride on one at 5! How lucky and spoiled are my kids, I am so glad that they have these opportunities to do so many fun things here in Utah!

After the carriage ride, I had some free tickets to the Discovery Center for kids down there. This is called the beehive, there are just tons of balls and holes for them to go down and up and all around. The kids LOVED this beehive! Shayanne especially. There is one part where you slide up this plastic cover and put the balls in a hole that blows air to push the balls up a tube. She was doing this for like 25 minutes I swear. Every time she would open it, the air would blow and she would started her flapping and smiling. It was hilarious and fun to see her enjoying this so much! If you know Shay, you know she does not pay attention for very long, so this was a great toy for her. We need to go down there more often!

Baby Love!

Stephanie at playgroup always brings her baby girl. Shay came to playgroup with us this past week and didn't really want to be involved in any of the activities, but she really did love the babies! She gets right up in their faces and I tell her to just say hi. She says hi and smiles at them! My Shay loves babies, just like her mama!

Shay's Sick

So we found out that Shay has Strep throat. She was so sick so I ran her to the urgent care on Tuesday. The doctor was very nice. She is on antibiotics and feeling a little better already. I had to cancel her therapy appointments for this week.

Today I asked her if she still wanted to go to the dentist tomorrow or to cancel her appointment. Of course Shay said "just cancel my appointment, just cancel it Mom" She hates the dentist. :)

I hope that she is feeling better by next week so she can go to school again and move on with her crazy busy life.

Not so much hair anymore.

So we decided to get Shay's hair cut because it is a hassle trying to brush her hair everyday. She was just getting it tangled really bad and then she would freak every time I even touched the brush. We decided to donate her hair to locks of Love. The hair lady cut off tons of hair. And thinned it out and took tons of hair off that way too. Her hair still looks like it is very thick. It is very short and a thousand times easier to style. I love it now actually. It was very hard for me to get used to. I am glad we did it now.

Swimming with Shay

Shay started swim lessons last week. She is obsessed with the water so I knew she would love swim lessons. She is going twice a week for a month. She asks me every day if she has swim lessons. Her first day she went we found out it is only for 20 min. So when she had to get out she was pretty upset. She threw a huge fit. This little boy had to help us get her out.

I had a hard day with Shay the day before I picked up these pictures. When I got them I started to cry because I think these pictures are so stinking cute! I love this little girl more than anything. I hate having hard days with her, but the good days out weigh the bad. I am so blessed to have her in my life and I have learned a ton from her. She is amazing in every way! I am a lucky Mom.

Shay had her first day of preschool today for the fourth time. She goes from 9am to 1:30pm This is really long for Shay. I was really worried about her, but she did okay. She didn't tell me anything really about her day, so I can't tell you what went on during the day. But when I took her in she was so excited she wouldn't listen to the teacher and then she ran and put her backpack away and ran outside. She didn't even really say bye to me. I tried to stay busy all day so I wouldn't miss her and I went to pick her up 30 min early so I could watch her through the "magic window".

Hair! Hair! Hair! Tons of Hair!

In case you haven't noticed, Shay has tons of hair!!! I like to keep it long because it's always in her face and this way I can just pull it up! So today I decided to braid it. I have been wanting to but I didn't know if she would let me. So we watched Pirate Dora and did some cool braids.

Shayanne loves to put her face under the water while she is in the bath. She calls it swimming! It's awesome she can hold her breath for a little bit! I thought her hair looked pretty awesome while she was "swimming".

4th of July Fun

The weekend before the 4th, West Bountiful put on their firework show. We went to the park with John's Mom Ruthie and Shay's cousin Jacob. It was a good time. Shay loved the fireworks, she just sat on John's lap the whole time and didn't move. (this is a big deal for Shay to hold still hahaha) Trying to get a good shot of the fireworks!

Then we went down to Vegas for the 4th. When we got down there Shay she started clapping her hands and said "Yeah I'm so excited." this was so funny because she doesn't usually tell us how she is feeling.

First we met my bro Paul and his family down town Las Vegas where they were staying and walked around and went to the Mirage and Circus Circus with them. It was so hot down there 105 degrees! Shay loved watching the dolphins swim! Here's a couple pics:

Down in Henderson is where John's Dad lives. We stayed down there and spent most the time just hanging out with them. Shay was so excited to go swimming, this is all Shay talked about the entire time. She had so much fun in the pool. John's Dad, step Mom and her Uncle Wyatt spoiled her with everything she wanted.

We then met Paul for the fireworks at Sunset station. It was cool because the show was right between two palm trees from where we were standing. It was a good show. We did some sparkler and we were all having fun until Shay burnt her hand on the sparklers and cried almost the whole time. She was way tired from swimming that day too. She's ok! Shay had a good time and didn't want to leave. But we made it home and she is happy to be here.
